Story of Krishna KC (M)

Krishna KC's journey is one of perseverance, courage, and overcoming the silent barriers imposed by his disabilities. Krishna has not only faced immense personal challenges but has emerged as the primary breadwinner for his family, ensuring a stable and happy life for his wife, daughter, and parents.

Born in Baglung, Krishna is one of four sons, and the only one who is deaf and mute. As a child, he had limited hearing, but over time, he lost his ability to hear altogether. Despite this, Krishna showed resilience, learning sign language during his school years and completing his high school education, an achievement he is incredibly proud of.

Krishna is married to a woman who is also deaf and mute, but together they are raising a daughter who is physically fit. Their love story is heartwarming; they met in class and communicated through a mobile app designed for people with hearing disabilities. Despite their challenges, Krishna and his wife have built a life based on mutual support, understanding, and love, even teaching their daughter sign language to bridge the communication gap within their family.

Life for Krishna hasn’t been easy. As a child, he felt isolated, interacting less with his family and friends due to his inability to hear. Despite his longing to contribute, many doors were closed to him because of his disabilities. Krishna had dreams of joining the army but was disqualified due to his condition. In search of a livelihood, he took on humble jobs like cleaning temples and working as a priest, but these roles often left him struggling to communicate with others.

Krishna reflects on the challenges he faced: "There were moments when no one understood me, and it was exhausting to work with gestures alone. I believe everyone should learn sign language to make life easier for people like me." His experiences of exclusion often left him feeling alone, leading him to avoid social gatherings where he couldn’t interact freely. But he found comfort in the company of those who understood sign language.

Krishna’s life took a positive turn when a classmate, Rama, who is also the wife of his handloom tutor, introduced him to Yes Helping Hands. Eager for a better opportunity, Krishna underwent three months of free training with a food allowance, learning the skills necessary to work in the handloom section. Today, he creates 14 to 15 shawls per day, taking pride in his work.

At Yes Helping Hands, Krishna has found more than just a job; he has found a supportive and inclusive environment where there is no dominance or hierarchy. "The work here is easy, and the environment is very friendly and welcoming. For the first time, I feel truly accepted," Krishna shares. His contentment is visible, not just in his craftsmanship but in his sense of belonging.

Krishna’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusivity and understanding. His resilience in the face of adversity, his love for his family, and his determination to provide a better life for them make him a true inspiration. He continues to shine as an example of what people can achieve when given the opportunity, despite the silent challenges they face.
