Story of Bikash Poudel (M)
Bikash Poudel, a married man from Nawalparasi, embodies resilience and determination. Born into a family where his two older sisters and brothers, like him, are all deaf and mute, Bikash faced immense challenges growing up. Despite his physical limitations, he always saw potential in his abilities and refused to let them define his life.
Bikash’s early life was difficult. He left school after the seventh grade, not because he lacked the ability to study but because he felt drawn toward work. He learned sign language in school, a skill that would become a lifeline for him. Starting with small jobs, he worked at a coffee shop for three years. He then found a job in a factory in Kathmandu, working on a handloom machine. This was no easy task, as it took him nine months to master a skill that most learned in just two or three months. But Bikash never gave up. He showed unwavering persistence and commitment, qualities that would shape the rest of his journey.
For eight years, Bikash worked in a store in Lakeside after calling him to Pokhara by Dinesh sir. He was later called to work in a factory in Damside, where his life took a significant turn. Today, Bikash is not only a skilled handloom worker but also the in-charge of the handloom section at Yes Helping Hands, an organization dedicated to empowering the marginalized, including those with disabilities. He now instructs and teaches others, demonstrating a role reversal that’s nothing short of inspiring. Once the slow learner, he now trains others, having taught more than 15 people so far. He is also the go-to person for any problems with the handloom machines, a testament to his expertise.
Bikash’s journey is not only about overcoming personal challenges but also about finding love and building a family. He met his wife, Rama, also deaf and mute, at Yes Helping Hands. Their shared challenges and aspirations brought them together, and today they are proud parents of a beautiful son, who is perfectly healthy. Despite their disabilities, they are raising their child with the same determination that has guided Bikash throughout his life.
Reflecting on his life, Bikash shared, "I am a slow learner, but I never gave up. I feel incredibly fortunate to have found this job that supports my family and allows me to work with respect. I also feel proud to teach others, even though I am deaf and mute."
Bikash’s story is one of gratitude, not only for the opportunity to work at Yes Helping Hands but also for the supportive community he found there. The organization, led by Dinesh Sir, has been instrumental in empowering individuals like Bikash. "Our Dinesh Sir is very supportive and always inspires us to work independently. He encourages us to learn and grow," says Bikash.
Through his work, Bikash supports his family financially, contributes to his community, and continues to overcome barriers. Despite facing exclusion due to communication challenges, he has built a life of independence and pride.
His journey is a reminder that while physical limitations may present obstacles, they can never extinguish the human spirit’s capacity for growth and success. "I am very happy to work here," says Bikash, whose story continues to inspire everyone around him.
